About Us

WHAT DO WE DO?

We are a community group raising awareness of and organising local events relating to sustainability and combating climate change; Our Projects include Repair Cafe, Plastic Free, Bishop-Eco Bags, Parish Council Working Party and in liaison Tree planting and Re-wilding, Hedgehog Group, Wildlife Group, and a Surplus Food Box

A bit of History

The Revival : Sustainable Bishop is going through a bit of a revival. We relaunched  at the Bishopsteignton Festival in June 2019.  This local group started approx 9 years ago, with a Give It Away Day , a Sustainable Supper, Wildlife walks and talks, and research into sustainable solutions for transport. The majority of the group then joined the Neighbourhood Development Plan Committee which took up all the time and Sustainable Bishop went quiet. The current climate crisis requires action NOW. We are interested in a Sustainable Greener Future and our interests cover everything from organic gardening, up-cycling, ethical investing and green energy, transport sharing and environmental protection and enhancement, to name but a few. We may hold some interesting talks but we also want to take action create projects. Climate Change affects all of us and we welcome everyone to join in, either on existing projects or by creating new.

Thanks to many hard working individuals this is what we achieved pre Covid 2019 -2020

  • Parish Council declared Climate Emergency and commit to Plastic Free Bishopsteignton
  • Started Plastic Free Bishopsteignton through Surfers Against Sewage
  • Participated in the Village Festival
  • Two Beach Cleans clearing just under 300kg waste
  • Jointly organised the Bishop Reacts event working towards the production of a Climate Emergency Action Plan
  • Two Repair Cafes (one including Repair Kid )
  • Displayed our stand at the Village Show, Big Breakfast and the Earth Service at the Church
  • Produced 150 hand-made Bish-Eco Bags from waste fabric
  • Thanks to Nikki Tallentire at Supply Stores, we have a permanent display giving out water saving devices, composting and food waste handbooks.
  • Starting our local tree scheme
  • Attended numerous meetings with similar groups in Teignbridge, sharing ideas and information

...... and all this achieved since our relaunch in the Spring 2019 ! It has not been easy to always keep positive but it proves that working together, many hands can achieve a great deal. We can’t escape the fact that things are going to change, but by getting involved, working as a community and learning what is needed, things will be easier.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported and worked so hard with Sustainable Bishop this year, it would not have been possible without you.
